"When you're in the studio painting, there are a lot of people in there with you - your teachers, friends, painters from history, critics... and one by one if you're really painting, they walk out. And if you're really painting YOU walk out." —Philip Guston

“The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery.”  —Francis Bacon
About
the work
Moonlight penetrates to the bottom of the pool,
Yet in the water no trace is left.
Zenrin Kushu
Spontaneity drives my creative process. I do not start with any preconceived idea, except deciding which colors to begin with. I want to be surprised by the work as it unfolds, instead of consciously directing or shaping it. I feel swept up by the medium, forgetting time, forgetting environment, forgetting self. The paint takes over and I am the vehicle—leaping into the unknown—and it is both terrifying and uplifting.
